Masterclass Real de Asúa, hosted by Jane Anson and Victor Urrutia Ybarra – Thursday 30th January
One of the most venerable of Rioja names, CVNE can trace its history back to 1879, when it was founded by the Real de Asúa brothers (thirty years later, its cellar was built by no less an architect than Gustave Eiffel). Named in honour of the founding siblings, Real de Asúa is a 100% Tempranillo from a single vineyard on the Carromaza estate in Villalba, a municipality in Rioja Alta 600m above sea level. The wine is known for its elegance, structure and age-worthiness
Over the last 150 years, CVNE – or Compañía Vinicola del Norte de España, to give it its full name – has established itself as one of the region’s true benchmarks. We are delighted, then, to welcome Victor Urrutia Ybarra, the winery’s CEO and a direct descendant of the brothers, to Verbier to host a masterclass based around one of the house’s standout wines. He will be joined for the event by friend of the Club Jane Anson, the Bordeaux-based critic who has written extensively about the connection between her home territory and Rioja.
Victor describes his mission at CVNE as twofold: ‘My ancestors worried about one thing only: making the best possible wine. I have added another concern to this very short list: to make our wines known across the world’.
