Château Montrose dinner hosted by Charlotte Bouygues – Saturday 25th January
If any Bordeaux château has been making waves over the last 15 years, it is surely Château Montrose. The St-Estèphe second growth, set on a gravelly knoll close to the Gironde estuary, was always renowned for producing some of the longest-lived wines in the Médoc. But under the ownership of the Bouygues family, it has reached new heights, now acclaimed for wines of charm and elegance as well as structure and power.
The property takes its name from the pink hue (‘Mont Rose’) of the flowering heather in springtime. Founded in 1815 and achieving 2ème Cru Classé status in the 1855 classification, it joined the extensive business portfolio of Martin and Olivier Bouygues in 2006. The brothers immediately made their intentions clear, hiring the former director of Château Haut-Brion, the late Jean-Bernard Delmas, and the former director of another first growth, Hervé Boland of Mouton-Rothschild, to finesse the finer details of the estate and overhaul the winemaking. Their efforts were bolstered by a major renovation of the whole property, based on the use of energy from solar, wind, and water sources via sophisticated geothermal energy systems (it helps when you run an extensive construction empire).
Today, with the refinements complete and a fresh, young team in place, Montrose is firing on all cylinders, and fully living up to its vaunted status. We are delighted, then, to welcome Charlotte Bouygues, Strategy and Development Director of the property, to the Club to host a five-course paired dinner with wines going back to the legendary Bordeaux vintage of 1989, as well as other such lauded years as 2015 and 2009, as well as the wines of sister estate Château Tronquoy Lalande.
