‘THE KING OF WINES AND THE WINE OF KINGS’ LOUIS XIV
The region of Tokaj has the distinction of being the first in Europe to be classified. Tokaji wine is the world’s original sweet white wine and became the subject of the world’s first appellation control, established several decades before Port wine, and over 120 years before the classification of Bordeaux.
The Confrérie de Tokaj serves as an umbrella organisation for the best of the region’s producers. They believe in the terroir and the unique character of these white wines, and whilst the members of the Confrérie largely consist of the wine producers themselves, membership is open to all wine lovers who share the same passion: the evolution of Tokaj. Ronan Sayburn MS and I were admitted to membership last year.
Every year, the Confrérie de Tokaj hosts an auction, and alongside up-and-coming producers, it offers a very small selection of exclusive parcels from the region’s top producers. A handful of bottles from each of these lots are held back for the cellars of the Confrérie de Tokaj, thus making certain expressions incredibly hard to obtain, if not impossible.
On 28th November, we welcome Laszlo Mezsaros, Peter Molnar (Patricius), Zoltan Kovacs (Royal Tokaji) and Samuel Tinon who will guide Members through a Masterclass tasting. The line-up includes rare expressions found from these exclusive parcels, along with wines to be featured in next year’s auction.
