Vergelegen masterclass dinner

When Willem Adriaan succeeded his father, Simon van der Stel, as governor of the Cape in 1700, it didn’t take long before he claimed a modest 30,000 hectare piece of land for himself just as his father had done in his time at Constantia. It took three days by ox-wagon to reach Willem Adriaan’s farm on the slopes of the Hottentots Holland mountain range overlooking the Atlantic Ocean; hence its name ‘Vergelegen’, meaning ‘situated far away’.

Having passed hands through several owners to include Sir Lionel Phillips and the Barlow family, AngloAmerican purchased the property in 1987. Extensive investments were made in viticulture and in restoring the Estate’s historic core; among the many projects undertaken on the Estate by AngloAmerican was an extensive programme of clearing invasive alien vegetation and land rehabilitation.

It gives me great pleasure to welcome CEO Don Tooth, Winemaker, Andre van Rensburg and Master of Wine, Remington Norman for a Masterclass dinner; we open with a blind tasting of two of Vergelegen’s award winning red blends, two of Bordeaux’s First Growths and two of Napa Valley’s 100 point wines, followed by a Masterclass dinner.

It is worth noting that Vergelegen have been incredibly generous with the bottles we will be opening – the ticket price is exceptional for the value of the wines being tasted. This is not one to miss…

We will enjoy:

Salmon gravadlax, pickled cucumber
Vergelegen G.V.B White (vintage to be confirmed)

Roated rack & slow-cooked shoulder of lamb, pommes Anna,
steamed tenderstem broccoli
2013 Vergelegen G.V.B Red

Apricot & almond tart, vanilla ice cream
2013 Vergelegen Straw Wine
