Blind Tasting Challenge at 67 Pall Mall
Everyone loves a Blind Tasting Challenge, at least the tasting part!
Klearhos and our Members were given a selection of wines chosen by Terry and Federico to taste blind. Klearhos shares his experience.
“The style of the wines chosen for the evening were similar to the ones we are given in the court of Master Sommelier exams. They include the typical grapes from all the main wine regions globally. With my guidance, we used a tasting structure to spot the variety, the climat, and if the expression was coming from either a New World or an Old World region.
Members found the approach incredibly exciting. They learnt the main stylistic categories – crispy/aromatic/oaky/elegant/structured/full-bodied”
A few tips?
“I also shared with the Members a few tips on how to pick up certain grape varieties without looking at the label :
- Wet-wool aromas with a touch of oak are good hints for Chenin Blanc;
- Stonefruit, lees ageing and crushed stone minerality are all typical characteristics for Chardonnay;
- Pale ruby colour, fresh red fruit with some beetrooty vegetal notes, new French oak and whole bunch fermentation elude to a NZ Pinot Noir;
- Narrow garnet rim with orange hues, dusty tannins, high acidity with dried red fruit could give away an Italian wine from Barolo”
