A spectacular celebration of Bordeaux with Jane Anson, in aid of The Gérard Basset Foundation – Monday 30th September

67 Pall Mall, London’s premier wine Club, is thrilled to announce a rather special date for your diaries this autumn, when Jane Anson returns to the club for a Bordeaux tasting with a difference. Hosted by – and in aid of – the Gérard Basset Foundation in association with Jane’s Bordeaux Mentor Week, this is a tasting of quite exceptional – and rare – wines from the Bordeaux pantheon.

As well as wines from several classed growths across both Left and Right Bank, Jane will present two wines from the vaunted Liber Pater, sourced from ungrafted vines and varieties that were common pre-phylloxera but have since been outlawed. The hugely limited Pater Denarius 2020 is rarely seen at tastings, while Tertadrachm is the brand’s new wine, from Naxos in Greece, and has yet to be tasted in the UK.

Further afield, we will also have the first taste of the 2021 vintage of Cheval des Andes – Cheval Blanc’s Argentinian outpost, along with Travis Braithwaite and Michel Rolland’s multi-continent project, Pangaea, a Bordeaux-style blend sourced from Napa Valley, Stellenbosch, Mendoza, Dehesa del Carrizal in Spain and the Right Bank of Bordeaux.

Proceeds from the event will go to the Gérard Basset Foundation, which funds programmes that support a diverse range of communities all over the world in making careers in wine open to all, regardless of background or circumstance. Among the initiatives it underwrites is Jane Anson’s Bordeaux Mentor Week (see image), which gives scholars the chance to immerse themselves in the winemaking, viticulture, sales, marketing and distribution of Bordeaux via an on-the-ground week in the region. Three former scholars will join us on the night to talk about their experiences and subsequent career path along with co-founder Chinedu Rita Rosa.

In addition to the tasting, guests will have the chance to win one of several prizes drawn on the night, including: two hand-numbered, limited-edition maps of Bordeaux châteaux from Jane’s Inside Bordeaux book; a set of six glasses from the Jancis Robinson Collection by Richard Brendon; Wine Scholar Guild’s Bordeaux Masters education programme; and various wines from the tasting.

Just as Bordeaux can be a difficult region to penetrate for aspiring wine professionals (yet offers real potential for career advancement, as it plays such a crucial role in the fine wine trade), so some of the region’s wines can be equally challenging to access. Join us to sample a select few  – and lend a helping hand to the next generation in the process.

All this, and Laurent-Perrier Héritage will be poured to open the evening – the newest wine launched in June of this year from the family-owned Champagne house, which was recently granted a Royal Warrant by King Charles III.
